250 days alcohol-free

250 days alcohol-free
Today marks the 250th alcohol-free day. When I shared this with my girlfriend on our walk this morning, she was very impressed. Good for you! she exclaimed. It felt good to hear her say that. After having gone this long without alcohol, it really doesn't feel like that huge of a deal. But, I have to recognize that it's a huge accomplishment, especially considering I could barely manage 30 days without booze only one year ago. Continue reading

The strange experience of being sober at a concert

The strange experience of being sober at a concert
I'm not a big concert-goer. Every once in a while a friend invites me to a concert in Toronto and I say yes. Last night was one of those occasions. With my boyfriend living 4000 km away, the social outings are slim this summer. So, when my girlfriend had an itch to head to Toronto to see Blue Rodeo and Sam Roberts Band outside, I jumped at it. Of course, as a former social drinker, the usual questions arose. Continue reading

Want to quit drinking alcohol? Remove this word from your vocabulary

Want to quit drinking alcohol? Remove this word from your vocabulary
After multiple failed attempts to quit drinking over the course many years, I discovered one of the biggest impediments to my success was related to one simple, small word. Eradicating it from my vocabulary was instrumental in helping me maintain the will power to finally stay dry over the longer term. Perhaps you know this already, but for me it was kind of a big deal. I had to quit relying on the word 'try'.   Continue reading

Going to bed at 9:30pm on Saturday

Going to bed at 9:30pm on Saturday
I'm falling asleep on the couch as I watch an episode of Amazing Race. I can't keep my eyes open after a busy day of errands, long walks, gardening and hanging out with my son. It's just past 9 p.m. I'm tired and, frankly, my bed is summoning me. I should mention that it's a Saturday night.  Continue reading

Take the gift of a new routine

Take the gift of a new routine
Although a change in routine may be a strange way to describe embracing sobriety, it was actually one of the biggest hurdles I faced in overcoming my reliance on the stuff. Routines, after all, by their very nature provide us comfort and security. We come to rely on our daily patterns so intensely that when one of them falls away, it can be extremely destabilizing and distressing. Continue reading

Substitutes for wine

Substitutes for wine
A tremendous part of the clarity journey is self-exploration. By that, I mean you'll be asking yourself a gazillion questions as you come to understand why you want to drink so badly, and how you can overcome that desire once and for all. One of the first places you'll likely start is determining what it is about the drinking experience, itself, that is so alluring.  Continue reading

Entering a new chapter without wine kinda sucks

Entering a new chapter without wine kinda sucks
With today being my birthday, I feel it's as good a time as any to reflect on the past five months since I quit drinking alcohol and consider what lies ahead. At face value, my life is amazing. I have so much to be grateful for. Healthy happy kids, great job, wonderful family, good health, amazing man in my life... the list could go on. Continue reading

Skip the booze when traveling

Skip the booze when traveling
There are so many ways that my decision to quit drinking has affected my day to day life that I had not given much thought to how it would affect my vacations. I’d booked my trip to Europe back in December as I was embarking on my new sober lifestyle. The challenge of traveling without my usual libations wasn’t even a glimmer of a thought. Continue reading
